sniffnoyWith all the free time we had today (being Saturday), and having actually worked on my pset, I decided to start a game of Illuminati. I had no idea where Josh[3] was, so we started a game without him. We had six players - actually more than six wanted to play, but 2 of them decided not to, but we still managed to get six (Me (Bermuda), Pinyan (Shangri-La), Max (UFOs), Anton (Network), Daniel (Assassins), and Jen (Zurich), some kid from Honors. Bob hung around being generally annoying, especially by making comments about the game without actually watching it. As soon as Josh *did* arrive, he did 2 things: be annoyed that we started a game of Illuminati without him, and start *actually* kibitzing (as opposed to what Bob was doing). However, Daniel had to leave at 18:30 - 3:30 into the game - so Josh took over for him. He had, however, gone around looking at everyone's specials previously, so he made up for it by revealing his own specials to everybody. Finally, at approximately 20:00, after 5 hours, Jen won. The way she won went essentially like this:
There were only 6 players, so you only needed 9 to win. Shangri-La had 8 and was going for a 9th, Wall Street. Everybody immediately started spending against him. He put up a valiant defense - er, attack - but it wasn't enough. However, it was enough to drain every last bit of money - and I am not exaggerating - out of *everybody's* Illuminati treasuries. Except, of course, for Zurich's. Turns out, she had more than 20 still in there. And Shangri-La had a very unbalanced power structure, with 5 groups all stemming from California. The CIA (under the control of Zurich) attacks to control California. Nobody can do anything about it. Zurich now has 8 groups. Hollywood (also under Zurich's control) attacks to control Coffee Shops, and Zurich wins. Of course, had she not done this, Josh would have done so next turn, although he probably would have faced slightly more resistance then.
You know, it just occurs to me that in all of the 3 complete games of Illuminati I've played with more than 3 people, I have been randomly dealt Bermuda every time. I do like Bermuda, but I've gotten it every time. Randomly. Fnord.
The game ending so late, I missed dinner and went to eat at Burger King.

And I *finally* remembered what the other thing I wanted to say 2 days ago was, which was that, before realizing we weren't supposed to do the back, Mung took the "The Council of Doom is IN" sign and stuck the word "doomed" over the word "IN". But that's beside the point, well, no it wasn't, because there was no point for it to be beside.
Oh, you have to see P10 on this problem set. It is so funny. It's a podasip (Prove Or Disprove And Salvage If Possible):

(Where φ(n) means the number of natural numbers ≤ n which are relatively prime to n, and (n,k) is the GCD of (n,k), and, if you're like me and using a browser which has little black rectangles surrounding 1/(n,k), those are supposed to be the symbols for floor .)
It shouldn't be exactly too hard to prove. Josh (the Counselor) called it the stupidest formula in the history of mathematics.
[3] Josh the Second Year, as opposed to Josh the Counselor. Josh the Second Year is simply someone who everyone *thinks* is a counselor. And he plays Illuminati.
