So, you want to hear about time zones? :)

I was reading again recently about time zones. I had some time ago attempted to answer the question: What's the biggest jump (mod 24) between two adjacent time zones? The answer I came up with is the 3.5-hour jump at the Afghanistan/China border if you don't count DST, and the 4-hour jump at the Russia/Alaska border if you do.

(If you use Xinjiang Time, and also don't allow DST, then the best is various 3-hour jumps: Russia/Alaska once again, or between the Aleutian Islands and the ocean south of Kamchatka, or, oddly, within Greenland, with the area around the tiny weather station of Danmarkshavn being offset 3 hours from most of the rest of the island.)

Anyway. When I was doing all this I of course excluded the north pole, where I guess every time zone meets. But I also excluded the antarctic. Could I redo this with Antarctica included?

...well, not really. Turns out there's not really standardized time zones in Antarctica. There's some claims of time zones based on territorial claims, but the actual stations down there don't necessarily respect these. Over on Wikipedia, this map seems to provide a decent summary, although the regions it shows are definitely not respected by some of the stations within those regions.

But this map has one thing about it that's really mysterious: Where did those time zones in Marie Byrd Land come from?? It shows Marie Byrd land split into a northern time zone of UTC-6 and a southern time zone of UTC±0 (and then there's the area around the south pole but let's ignore that, that part makes sense). What are these based on? Nobody claims Marie Byrd Land. There's no stations there. What is this coming from? Former stations? That's the only thing that would appear to make sense. The former Russkaya station would explain the UTC-6, I guess, but that still leaves the UTC±0 area as mysterious.

I'd ask the person who made the map -- one "Phoenix B 1of3" -- but they seem to have retired from editing Wikipedia. Oh well...
