OK let's turn to more interesting things now. Actually this isn't as long as I expected. I'll leave out Mafia though because, well, you know.

So Heidi was here during election day. She actually didn't realize this was going to be the case when initially planning it but realized it some time later and arranged to have an absentee ballot sent here.

Unfortunately it didn't arrive until, like, Saturday, leaving her very little time to send it in. (I guess she wouldn't have much time to send it in even if it (and she) had been here Wednesday.) Especially so in that apparently, Missouri requires absentee ballots to be notarized. Uh... where can we find a notary public around here? Well, I recalled seeing a "notary public here" sign on a certain bike shop... but when we went there, it turned out her [whatever it is you call it that makes you a notary] had recently run out, and the renewal wouldn't go through for another week or two. [Note: I am actually telling this story slightly out of chronological order, and skipping quite a bit, because most of it is boring.] Google turned up some stuff, but nothing we could actually get to at the time. Finally we found one that would at least be open Monday morning, and she set out Monday morning -- for what that was worth, seeing as it was the day before the election -- and, uh, I don't know what happened. She won't say. But apparently the ballot didn't get notarized and she didn't get to vote. :-/

Naturally I introduced Heidi to Dominion while she was here. She had said it sounded stupid earlier so I was surprised that she really liked it, and we played a bunch. Just against each other, though; unfortunately she didn't get a chance to play against Hunter. Also, apparently I am even worse at Dominion than I realized, because she beat me about half the time. Yikes.

Also apparently Heidi had never played Worms before? Well, Dan and I introduced her to Worms. Well -- we didn't play very many games and so by the end she was still not really having a clue what she was doing; Dan was giving her detailed instructions each turn. I was trying to give a more high-level approach on what to do, but, oh well. See, I've now learned Heidi doesn't like video games requiring you to react fast -- her familiarity with e.g. Mario comes from watching, not playing. So I thought Worms made for an interesting middle ground and had to wonder what she would think of it. Apparently she liked it, so, yay.

Heidi kept refering to everything here as "fancy". Also "quaint". I said that those two seemed to contradict each other, but... well, uh, actually, I don't remember where that discussion went. Regardless, she was pretty amused to see that we had a box of oranges labeled "fancy oranges". (They were just the usual oranges we get from GFS, of course.)

Hm. That... is actually most of what I wanted to say (not involving Mafia). So here's unrelated things that also happened during that time period:

Some sad news -- Pierce Tower is going to be closing at the end of the year. So, no more Tufts House. Well, Jack and Sarah get the honor of being the final RHs of Tufts House. And the good part is it sounds like the people who decide these things intend to try to preserve the good aspects of Pierce in whatever new dorm replaces it.

Also I got myself a copy of The Lands of Ice and Fire. I thought it would be a book of maps, instead it's just 12 really large fold-out maps, not bound together. There's a map of the known world! With a small glimpse of a fourth continent, Ulthos! Or at least it looks like a continent. And who knows if it really exists, because things that are far from Westeros on the map are not necessarily guaranteed to be accurate -- the idea is that these maps are what the maesters in the Citadel would know, or have written down, rather than truly accurate maps of the world.

Also: Wow it is a lot easier to wake up in the morning when there is someone staying in your room who both wakes up earlier than you and you actually want to talk to.
