I am quickly becoming convinced that when it comes to representing quantities whose exact value is not known, the ± way of representing intervals (as opposed to explicitly listing their endpoints) encourages sloppy thinking. It implies that the center point and the radius can be operated on independently, which often they cannot. Obviously it's a natural way that intervals arise, but once you start doing operations on them, it makes less sense.
