Second draft; travel

OK, I've put together a second draft of my and Josh's results on integers with complexity close to the lower bound. Josh's upper bound work is getting split off into a separate paper since it's really a separate idea, and also this one is really long.

I've been told it's hard to get things published that are longer than 20 pages, so this may have to be shortened further, but I'm not sure how. (Well, OK, if that actually turns out to be necessary first thing would probably be to cut section 10. :P ) See, it's shorter because some sections got cut or significantly shortened, but it's not much shorter because one of the problems with the first draft was that it wasn't really readable if you didn't already know something about the problem, which of course hardly anybody does, so I had to spend a bunch of space decompressing what I originally wrote.

Well, we'll see what people think of this one.

So due to me having to come back to New Jersey (and then go up to Boston) for Elana's graduation, I didn't really have the chance to go visit Chicago while school was still going. (It still is going there, but YKWIM. Leaving for New Jersey on Saturday, staying there 2 1/2 weeks, in Boston area for Elana's graduation weekend of the 28th).

So that's disappointing. Colin is in Chicago - teaching elementary/middle school, apparently - and has said I should come visit him and Aviva sometime, so I guess I'll do that, see who's around. (Are Jack and Sarah staying on for another year? I.e. can I go see Hannah and Sasha? :) ) But I have to wonder how often I'll have reason to go there after that - next year Winston and Youlian won't even be there... (I mean, I doubt Youlian will be there during the summer either, but YKWIM.) Ah well.

Awww, no visit from Harry this year =(. So it goes. Still, Jack and Sarah will be around for one more year if you want to see them, and Colin tries pretty hard to get people to visit his place, so you'll have to come back and drop by his and Aviva's place for sure.

And yeah, I won't be here during the summer. Chicago --> Tallahassee for 3 weeks --> Mathcamp for 6 weeks --> Backpacking for 1 week --> Redmond for... who knows how long.

Yeah, if I'd realized it would work out like this there's a good chance I would have come during spring break like last year. That or just started planning a lot earlier so it wouldn't have been a problem...

I wonder just who else is in Chicago? I realize I have very little idea. I recall hearing Kate and Girl Alex are. Oh! And I think Jim is. Heh, Ginny lives here in Ann Arbor now, but I've seen her, like, twice...

Of course I guess the relevant question to me right now is "Who's in New Jersey / New York?" and to a lesser extent "Who's in Boston?" As for the former, well, certainly Mickey, and, uh, ADan? That's neither in New Jersey (man suburbs are annoying - or noncity places in general, really), and that's all I can think of offhand. Not PK, he's here! (If I've not mentioned him before, PK is a person in Truth House who happens to be from New York.)

Heh, maybe I'll go bug Josh so long as I'm up near Boston... I expect he's still around there...

(Oh hey! Baumstein's probably around! I didn't think of that before...)

(Oh hey and Lizgoetz is probably in New York too... huh, Facebook is useful sometimes...)

(...and OK I guess I actually can think of more people who might be around, but of course, less likely there or not necessarily people I've seen in some time...)
