For now, let me tell instead a story of near-disaster. You see, the computer shipped with Windows, and of course I wanted to use Ubuntu. But I figured as long as I have Windows I may as well keep it around, right? Well, I let the installer do the partitioning (OK, this had more to do with me not wanting to bother figuring out the partition editor's interface than with me not wanting to do manual partitioning), and set it to doing so. Naturally it says it'll take a while. Well I come back like maybe an hour later and... something's wrong. The descriptive text above the progress bar says "ready when you are", but the progress bar isn't full, and the computer doesn't appear to be doing anything. I click to see the details. What I see is error message after error message, all the same:
"intel ips 0000:00:1f.6: MCP power or thermal limit exceeded"
Wow. The computer fucking overheated during repartitioning. That certainly was not in my model. I leave for an hour or so to make sure it's not just being really slow, but no, an hour later it has not progressed. So... I gave it a hard shutdown. What the hell else was I going to do? It's not too big a deal if I've fucked over the hard drive, since after all I can just wipe everything and put Ubuntu on it anyway. It is new, after all. But I did want to keep Windows around if possible.
Fortunately, it turned out the repartitioning was successful, Windows booted successfully, and I just had to use the manual partition editor to tell it to install on the partition it had already made. The fact that the only operation performed on existing partitions was resizing, and not moving, of partitions, may have been a factor there...
The second time, of course, I plugged in the external fan. I hadn't bothered with it, because why would I expect this computer to run so hot? Also, this thing only has 2 USB ports... :-/

No, I mean I independently happen to have an external USB fan; my parents got it for me some years ago because my old Windows laptop used to run pretty hot. (Admittedly, it probably didn't help that I was placing it on the carpet.)
