Taking a short break from grading to write this...

Saw this on LW: Sometimes I think the Singularity is just a bad joke. Some of these sound very, uh, Winston-ish.

Have you all heard Sega is making a "Sonic the Hedgehog 4"? Yeah, unsurprisingly it doesn't look very good. Including the homing attack in a 2D game is dumb; making it a quick way to gain speed is possibly dumber. (Which reminds me, I still haven't had the chance to play Megaman 10...)

When I first saw the Pirates in Kongai, my first reaction was just "OMG new cards how can I possibly assess them?!" Now my mind has cleared a little and taking an actual look at them I'm able to better form impressions. (I also went and wrote down all the changes made to the original characters and items; except in a few cases, they're not that drastic.)

So here are my not-from-experience, not-really-that-great-a-player's impression of the new guys:

Auger - Well, this is different; the only long-range interrupt previously was Lightning Arrow and that hardly counted. But, you know me, I don't like using anyone so monorangy. So I doubt I'll end up using him.

Ranec - Ranec seems interesting but unwieldy. His innate is cool and Ghostly Touch is a really neat sapping effect. I'm contemplating building a deck with him but again - wary of range issues. The good news is Ghostly Touch only costs 10 so he only needs 60 if he wants to get close and use it. The bad news is, he needs 60 to get close and use it. Yeah, I guess he's pretty terrible at far, huh? I feel like he'd be better with a general increased probability to dodge, rather than a certainty of dodging at certain times - wait, of course that would be better! Obviously it's worse for you if the enemy knows when you're going to dodge! Maybe I won't use him after all.

Darla - Yay, dual-ranged goodness! Well, OK, she's clearly better at far, but she doesn't look terrible up close. Her innate seems very good; those 10% chances have to add up after a while, and you only need for it to hit once in order to really screw up your opponent's gameplan. Gem of Souls sucks - well, OK, it got a buff in the update, but I bet you it still sucks - but imagine if it didn't cost you an item slot? This is better than that. Definitely want to try her out. Egg or Doubloons, I wonder? For once, someone where I find myself saying "She seems like she might make a good complement to Higashi", rather than "I'd rather just use Higashi".

Balthazar - Interesting! His abilities are certainly synergistic, especially with Ornamental Egg, but is he actually good? Well, I'm going to have to try him out once I can get my hands on a copy. I mean, he's got a teleport (Ranec's hardly counts), a stun (Ornamental Egg!)... could he be used similarly to Rumiko? Well, probably not, no, but he seems good anyway.

Starbuck - Seems a solid beater, I guess, but I'd rather just use Higashi.

So far I just have Starbuck and Ranec, and none of the items; as mentioned above, I'm contemplating trying out a deck consisting of Ubuntu, Phoebe, and Ranec. Since I have no Pirate items, for now I'm going to put the Yellow Rock on him.

The one about the Pre-emptive orbital x-ray laser bombardment is good enough that I think I'm going to actually use that one. Most of the rest are just not funny. The last one about the superconsciousness threshold is also amusing.

See I basically just liked the lightbulb, common cold, and the bar one. Those are funny in a rather different way, I think...
