Today there was a fire drill - apparently this one was an actual drill rather than the more common false alarm.

So we all go to the stairs and head out; I'm the first one to the bottom of the gray stairs.

The door will not open. I try holding it, thinking it's one of those timed things, but no, it just doesn't open.

Meanwhile a mass of people has built up behind me - due to the twisting of the stairs, not many have seen the door's failure. "TURN AROUND!" we start shouting. "THE DOOR WILL NOT OPEN. GO TO THE RED STAIRS." It takes like several minutes before the message gets across and enough people start heading back that we're able to go all the way back up the gray stairs and out to the red stairs, where the doors are working.

Emergency exits that won't open. Amazing, guys. I guess it's a good thing we had a drill.

Yeah, um, perhaps someone in authority should be told about this? :-/

Also, isn't it a legal requirement that there be a certain degree of frequency of fire drills? Granted, I don't know how things are in Illinois, but I would think they would make you do them at least one every two months or something to discover problems like fused emergency exits...

Yeah, they found out immediately, it would have been a bit hard for them not to. They'll fix it, we're told, but in the meantime we are advised to use the red stairs in case of emergency...

As for legal requirements, I don't know. If there is one, quite possibly you don't have to have drills if the alarms actually go off that often. :P
