Miscellaneous scraps

sniffnoyGinzburg is defining "ideal" to mean "proper ideal", because otherwise, he says, he'll forget to say "proper ideal" when that's what he means. Blech. This is going to cause more problems than it will avoid, I'm pretty sure. Already he's run into the problem of saying "a set is an ideal iff it's the kernel of some homomorphism", because, whoops, looks like we have to require that the target space not be 0...
So many people are dropping out of Miklos[0], it seems! Our group is down from 6 to 3, and we've barely started... Also, in my group is Scott who I roomed with when I was in REU here, but somehow I've managed to not be completely awkward around himj, so yay.
Last night I had a pretty bad cold, and I ended up in a state where I had a hard time telling my dreams from reality. I was convinced I had multiple noses, and was trying to consider the group they generated.
Youlian and Winston are apparently practicing at being Starcraft commentators. They practiced on a few matches between Elizabeth and Ben (first-year). It's kind of odd to see, them projecting motives onto the two players, when you can tell that's not what they're actually thinking...
I managed to get out Chu-Chu Rocket, playing against Winston and Peter. I didn't lose a single round to either of them; Winston is amazed I can play that game so well but not Starcraft. (He seems to be comparing every game to Starcraft recently... also, actually I was pretty sloppy.) Probably the only time anyone's ever said to me "Harry, that was so leet!" Now he apparently wants to train before playing me again. :P
Kate Harney came here with some other 3rd-and-4th-years to play Set. I managed to get out Pow Wow, but most people seemed to be more interested in commenting that the game seems racist, or drinking, than actually playing, and so there was only one game. Man, I thought Pow Wow would go over really well. We have a first-year, Jasper, who apparently plays a bunch of boardgames, but so far I haven't really had time or opportunity to get any out other than a game of Nexus Ops on the 1st day or so. I want to play Robo Rally, unfortunately Youlian didn't bring it this quarter.
The downstairs TV is getting even worse than usual, it seems, and there's talk of replacing it. Luckily, Ben, the first-year, "spends too much time pricing electronics", so yay. Meanwhile we also want to get a Wii, Brawl, guitar controllers to replace Ed's, and Guitar Hero 2. That's a lot for the house to buy! We'll see what happens.
I still have never seen this "Jim Mumford" person who has moved in with Nick.
I haven't said much about the first-years. Well, I guess you'll come to know them in time.
