Backup and... then what?
Aug. 12th, 2008 05:22 pmSo last night I got around to seriously backing stuff up. I think I got most of the important stuff, though now that I have Elana's space to work with I can go and back things up more thoroughly. And here I thought I was actually going to have to sort through what to delete and what to keep... (my "most of the important stuff" was determined by presumed content, inferred from location and file type - not from actual content or even names). Depending on how large the HD on whatever I end up getting is, though, I might want to do that anyway.
And yeah, there are definitely a few corrupted files here and there. So I'm thinking the hard drive problems I surmised are probably real. I've just put notes in the appropriate folders, listing them.
I guess time to start looking into what I'm going to get to replace this thing.
I recalled Zev at PROMYS talking about some amazing new machine, the MSI Wind, and I remember Mickey had recommended something to me. Turns out what he had left a comment about on my LJ was also the MSI Wind.
So looking at this thing - well, good points: Price. Assuming I get the version that doesn't come with Windows (which comes with SuSE instead), only $400.
Bad points: First of all, availability. Where the hell am I supposed to find one of these things? Nobody seems to have the cheaper Linux version, aside from Amazon, and they're out of stock. And paying the extra $100 for Windows XP hardly seems worth it when I really don't expect to be playing recent games on this thing. Which brings me to:
Second of all, its specifications aren't much better than my current one - on clock speed it's considerably worse, 1.6GHz vs 3.06 GHz, though considering how shitty this thing is doing, I expect that in terms of effective speed it would be faster. Still, I had kind of hoped to play Portal at some point. :P And these stats are barely, or not even, good enough to play it under Windows, let alone emulated. (Or not emulated, or whatever the hell it is Wine does. Compatibility-layered.) But it should easily be good enough for Starcraft, Worms Armageddon, and Freespace 2 (especially as the last is actually available for Linux), no? :D
So, $400, and good enough for what I'm actually going to use it for, it seems. But damned hard to find, unless I pay another $100 for Windows, which I won't have much use for as it still wouldn't be good enough for recent games. And I am going to want this before school starts, ideally, so things aren't too messy.
Thoughts or other recommendations? I remember Mickey mentioningSanger Sager laptops as being really good, but looking those up it seems I don't need something like that; I'm sure if I actually bother to research things more I can find something cheaper that's still good enough (and is actually available), but I haven't really taken the time to do that yet.

Date: 2008-08-13 06:16 pm (UTC)And...um...it all depends on how much you're willing to spend. That's pretty much the most important factor.
True enough. The problem is that right now there's the complicating factor of "Will this thing ever actually be available" (plus the everpresent factor of "I'm bad at looking this stuff up and will have to actually take the time to do so at some point (and I don't think I can get Ian to do this for me)").
