1. An unknown drunk girl wandered into Youlian and Bryan's room late one night. Hilarity ensued. Here we have Youlian's account of the matter; you'll have another when I put the minutes up here, as it won Weenie of the Week.

I'll also post for you right now what Amelia[0] decided to declare an "honorable mention" for Weenie:

Winston nominates Bryan for his puzzle-solving skills. Here are some hints: 4 is the universe. 5 is 4, 4 is the universe. 3 is 5, 5 is 4, 4 is the universe. 1 is 3, 3 is 5, 5 is 4, 4 is the universe.

[At this point in the minutes, I just supplied the answer. However, it's a very easy puzzle - nearly everyone got it pretty quickly - so I'll let you solve it and rot13 the rest of what happened with Bryan. It was, however, not Bryan but Takumi that was declared honorable mention, so if you can't solve it quickly, you can just skip over the rot13 section to where we come to Takumi's involvement.]

[Oh, so you can actually solve it, some more hints: 6 is 3, 3 is 5, 5 is 4, 4 is the universe. 9 is 4, 4 is the universe. 7 is 5, 5 is 4, 4 is the universe. 8 is 5, 5 is 4, 4 is the universe. 11 is 6, 6 is 3, 3 is 5, 5 is 4, 4 is the universe. That should be enough.]

Also Takumi, who thought he got it in about 15 minutes, from just the hints, 1 is 3, 2 is 3, 6 is 3, 3 is 5, 5 is 4, 4 is the universe, but then said to Winston, "It's because they're all divisible by 1, isn't it?"

2. I still have not written up an entry about the whole "Tufts House vs. IHC" episode; perhaps I'll do so when the quarter's over. Otherwise you'll have no idea what the fuck happened at the beginning of the Week 5 meeting (if any of you actually read that anyway).

3. Eh, this one should be its own entry. Some other time...

4. So Rooster Teeth has started making a sequel series to Red vs. Blue, called "Red vs. Blue: Reconstruction". I don't know how funny it'll be, but from the trailer and first episode that are up (I'd suggest watching the trailer first), it seems pretty neat.

5. I got No Thanks! out the other day. Need to play that more often. My copy of Pow Wow also sits still unused... Also played Duel of Ages against Peter. You know, I got Set 2, what, at the beginning of the year? And I've only played the game twice since then, once against Grant, once against Peter, and both times, we decided, no point trying to include all the set 2 shit now, I'll just explain rules for the new cards and characters. (Though, against Grant, we went with just the terrain from Set 1, while against Peter, we used Set 2 as well - OK, so also I had to explain mesas - just picking 4 as usual but from a larger pool.) Next time, I suppose, we'll finally include team bases and all.

But the main point of this, I think, this that the Bladed Terror is a beast. Seriously. I mean, Peter got unlucky with the dice, but a strong, fast melee character at the beginning of the game? If Peter hadn't had Beowulf to fight him off, and there hadn't been all that swamp Kit Carson could flee through, he would have been in, well, a lot more trouble! (As it was, Beowulf does pretty well against the Terror by himself, but Peter got really unlucky with the dice.) The Bladed Terror killed off two of his characters before Beowulf finally killed him, and by that point Beowulf was down to a single health and died later.

6. So Number Theory has essentially finished - all he planned for up to was Dirichlet's theorem, so now he's just doing assorted interesting results. I was looking through the course catalog the other day - planning classes for next year, of course - and I noticed the course description for (Nominally Algebraic) Number Theory: "Topics include factorization in Dedekind domains, integers in a number field, prime factorization, basic properties of ramification, and local degree." Yup, don't know anything about those last two. Guess I'll just read up on that on my own time.

7. I think I'm going to take the intro Linguistics sequence next year. You know, that'll be the first class I've taken here that hasn't been either math, CS, or core. Also, it occurs to me that I may have a hard time finding classes next year, as there don't seem to be many math or CS classes left that I'm actually interested in... at least undergrad ones, anyway, and you need special arrangements to take grad classes. (Though, I am going to be taking graduate algebra next year, or at least I will be once I actually go talk to Diane Herrmann about how the hell do I actually register for this?)

8. My computer has recently gone from "horribly slow" to "ridiculously slow". Unless it was already ridiculously slow. Well, it's gone from very slow to even slower. And Acrobat has mysteriously stopped working. Unfortunately it did so by freezing the computer for minutes at a time, so it took me quite a while to verify that yes, it was Acrobat, and not just individual PDF files, that were causing the problem. I think when I get home I'm just going to have to back the thing up and reformat... I hope my other hard drive has enough space for that! Well, there's probably a lot I can throw out anyway. As long as I'm doing that, I guess it would be a good idea to put Linux on this thing. But I'll definitely have to keep on Windows, in the hopes that maybe now, oh, I don't know, games that are 10 fucking years old will run at a decent speed!

[0]Wait, Amelia, what? So, what happened is this: Colin (President) and Eve (Vice-President) were both absent, and Blake (RA) began to lead the meeting. Wait, wait! say we. RA doesn't lead house meeting! Now it happened earlier in the year that Colin and Eve were both absent, and Aaron took charge, and Mike wrote down in the minutes, "So the chain of command goes President, Vice President, Condom Czar". However, Aaron too was not here. So... Secretary? I'm taking the minutes, no way I can lead. Treasurer? That's Agnes. She doesn't want to do it. So... now what? I point out that last year it happened once that neither President nor VP was on hand, and Girl Alex took charge, and it was noted that apparently the, uh, line of succession goes President, Vice President, Social Chair. (Of course, this is also consistent with President, Vice President, Condom Czar, as she was that too at the time.) So, who's Social Chair? Agnes again. So, we do make her lead after all. However, right before Weenie of the Week, we realized, wait, Amelia's here! She's a Condom Czar! And we made her take over.

I don't think it would be a bad idea to start looking into a new computer at this point. I don't even remember when you got that one--I can't imagine it'll run Ubuntu or any modern distro well, for that matter (although it certainly doesn't hurt to try).

I think there were some other really weird characters in Intensity...there's one who basically becomes God in swamps, although I don't remember the others. The team base thing I actually think is pretty cool.

Also, what's a Condom Czar? Is that someone who puts up envelopes in hallways containing free condoms?

Well, the even older desktop back at home seemed to run Xubuntu with little problem, though of course I didn't test it very hard. :D I guess that doesn't exactly count as "modern", though, does it? But still, this thing ran fine with Windows XP for quite a while, IIRC; XP is pretty heavyweight, no? I would hope even "modern" distributions should be lighter than it... (And of course, getting a new computer would cost actual money.)

I'm wondering what team bases will do to playing time. (I mean, to what we should set it to, obviously.) Offhand it seems like it would make it longer?

Also, what's a Condom Czar? Is that someone who puts up envelopes in hallways containing free condoms?

It's not, though perhaps that would be a good idea. Actually they just keep them in their rooms. The system of having two Condom Czars (one male, one female) actually is the result of determining that asking the RA for condoms is just way too awkward.

Condom distribution is handled differently on our campus--we have those envelopes in hallways, and the CHOICE office distributes them in multiple ways--one of the more well-known ways is if you email them, they anonymously put a bunch in your mailbox. But then, our campus is much smaller.

I'm pretty sure Ubuntu is more resource-intensive than XP (although much less so than Vista). My desktop definitely seems to run XP faster, although I haven't tried Xubuntu on it--using GNOME probably is a mistake, now that I think about it.

Reading your mention of drunken college girl antics, I was amused, and followed your link.

Reading Youlian's account of this, I was cracking up, and totally wanted to share such nonsense with as many people as possible.

... then I got to the part about actually describing the girl as a fencer who just injured her foot, and realized I know who this is! Egads.

I've been meaning to try that for a long time now. This is where it hurts to be one of the newer Linux users who were waiting around for Ubuntu to come into existence before testing the waters. :-P
