Family tree of video game controllers. Nice, no?

Meanwhile... I got the old computer up and running - for real this time - running Xubuntu, though to what end, I have no idea. (And man, I'd forgotten how small 800x600 was...) Mostly just as a test that I wasn't going to have trouble with it if I ever get around to installing it on the laptop. Though, I still need to check that the automatic partitioner did what I expected it to... though I used that as the HD on that one had been formatted anyway. If I install it on the laptop, I'm probably going to want to repartition it myself anyway.

Hey, I could try playing Freespace on it. It's an old computer, but, well, it's an old game. Only reason it runs slowly on this thing is because everything runs slowly on this thing. I got Worms Armageddon working - turns out there's a patch for Windows XP - and *it* runs slowly on this thing.

...yeah, I don't think I actually have enough for another paragraph, so I'll end this here.

No promises on Freespace. How quickly does everything run? Does Compiz Fusion work? Is Xgl slowing it down? Also, you can just do `sudo aptitude install gparted` to get an idea of what your partitions are like.

Uh... no idea what either of those are. I haven't really used the thing much, so it's hard to say, but Firefox seems a bit slower than I'm used to; haven't tested the rest much. The snake game that comes with it runs at a good speed, anyway. :P

Also, is Xfce limited to 800x600? Because I thought maybe the reason I couldn't turn it up higher than that was my monitor (there's a short period when it starts up when the monitor gives me the "out of frequency" message or whatever it is), but an 80x25 terminal takes up a good portion of the screen even in an 8-point font, and there's no way that was true before...

It's from 2001, never been upgraded. No idea if that's really so old I need to use Xubuntu, but I hadn't really thought about when it was from, and just from what I was told there didn't seem to be any obvious real disadvantage, so...

Let's see if I can get some actual stats on the thing. 18G hard drive, that much I know... now there's got to be some program that tells me the rest. The system monitor seems to say 123M of physical memory? Not sure if I'm reading that right. (Why 123? Maybe 128?) Processor speed... I have no idea.

Hm, none of the help files seem to work.

Ah, OK, 128 MB memory, 600MHz processor.

...and yeah, looking it up, apparently 128MB is not enough to run normal Ubuntu. So looks like I did have to after all.
