Wherein much is made of two rectangles

sniffnoyThere are two possible interpretations of today's Smash update, or, more specifically, of the fact that it has an icon other than the Smash logo in the corner.
The first is that this means there will be a Pictochat character. Alternatively, the song selection screen shown indicates that the icon is not for Pictochat per se but rather for generic DS/Wii functions - note the inclusion of "Mii Channel" and "Wii Shop Channel". Of course, there's also that Brain Age music listed, but many of the stages in Melee had secondary music from outside their game or series, e.g., the Fire Emblem music that's the alternate music in Hyrule Temple. This would strongly suggest a Mii character - an actual Pictochat character makes no sense; a Mii is the only thing that seems to fit. However, the two boxes used for the logo is suggestive of the DS specifically, and would not fit with a Mii character. So, I find this possibility unlikely.
The second interpretation, which seems the more reasonable, is that this indicates that having an icon for a series does not necessarily imply a character from that series, only a character or stage. In particular, it means that we do not have a guarantee that there will be an Animal Crossing character in Brawl. (It also means we're technically not guaranteed that Captain Falcon is returning, but I find it safe to say he will be.)
