Take a look at the latest Smash update.

Samus really does transform into Zero Suit Samus after firing the Zero Laser, her final smash.

People are going to be pissed off.

As cool as they are, I still don't like the idea of super moves in the game. Luckily, they're item based, so we can turn them off. (Note that if we couldn't them off, that would be awful. Item-based super moves suck. It's kind of OK if you have to collect several, but one?)

Unless they've altered playing with items in such a way as to make it acceptable to tournament players - which I kind of doubt - this means there's not going to be Zero Suit Samus in tournaments.

People are going to be pissesd off.

Unless Zero Suit Samus is a separate, selectable character as well as being Samus's transformation? That'd be pretty weird, but it's not out of the question.

It's also not impossible that items have been altered to work better in tournaments - the biggest problem with items, AIUI, is that you couldn't, in 64 and Melee, turn off crates/boxes/capsules. And, of course, you couldn't turn off exploding crates/boxes/capsules. And that's what made items too random - you could get blown up out of nowhere by accidentally attacking the wrong item (there were other explosives, but they could be turned off) or worse yet, have one spawn on top of you, and you die for no reason. It's entirely possible that these container items will be disablable like other items in Brawl, and it's also possible that they won't explode anymore - their entry makes no mention of exploding, only of sliding. Of course, they haven't said they *don't* explode...

Even if the item system has been modified to the point that tournament players don't mind playing with some subset of the items, are they really going to play with the smash balls? 1-item super moves are... kind of ridiculous. There's been some suggestion that maybe the final smashes are actually kind of balanced, but I'm skeptical.

Hell, even if Zero Suit Samus is separately selectable, it means Samus players, with smash balls off, will only be playing half their character. Similarly for Zero Suit Samus players.

Guys, cool idea, but next time think about what it actually implies, huh? :-/

UPDATE: And today's update, the Zero Suit Samus entry. This is the main entry for the character, and it only mentions her as appearing after Samus's final Smash. Amazing, guys, amazing. You had better have something big up your sleeve...

How is this any different between Link and Young Link or Zelda/Sheik?

I kind of trust them because the people that make this game are Smash Bros fans in of them selfs. They most likely tested this game hard before putting this stuff in and they still have time to cut anything out.

Besides, I love the fact that you can throw pieces of her suit back at her.

...because it's not the same thing at all? Because Young Link and Link are two separate characters entirely? Because Zelda can transform into Sheik and back as her down B? Because neither of the above involves items?

I'm rather annoyed about the whole ZSS thing not even from a game design perspective--because I feel that the suit subverts the character, and was only put into the game to try to steal DOA fanatics away from Microsoft. Of course, it's not like Samus has never been used as hyper-sexualized fanboy bait before, but to weave such a change into her entire character design?

I called the Zero Suit final smash thing over a month ago. It was pretty obvious from the video and once they revealed the concept of final smashes.

You and everyone else - the hint was pretty obvious. I just didn't think they would actually do it. Because, well, see above.

Yeah, I'm not too upset about it, although I do agree entirely with the points you made. Perhaps because I'm kinda glad that Samus isn't the new Zelda.

Still, there are a ton of other ways they could have implemented this. She transforms when she takes takes too much damage, perhaps. Or say she transformed every time she got a kill - then you'd *have* to use both characters. That would probably annoy a lot of people, though, especially as the awarding of kills isn't really too meaningful (although one could say that this would *make* it meaningful). She transforms after doing a certain move that's *not* a final smash (unlike Zelda/Sheik, this would be an actual move - i.e., it takes time and it does damage). She alternates each time she dies, that would also force you to use both (and probably annoy people...). There's just so many other ways they could have done it.
