So I finally figured out why arbitrary vector spaces have well-defined dimension.

It might have helped if I had at any point before now actually payed any attention to the proof for finite-dimensional vector spaces.

My sentiments exactly. Good God, man, review the basics, lest you lose your reputation for brilliance! I mean, I was discussing arbitrary vector spaces with my sister last night, and she's 15. C'mon, dude. Don't let us down like this.
