A *very* misused Triviality
Oct. 21st, 2003 08:49 pmNomicron includes a mechanism known as "Trivialities". These were originally intended to replace the earlier "Spelling Correction" and "Language Correction" and similar mechanisms, putting it all under one blanket title. However, Trivialities actually have the power of full-blown amendments. On the other hand, you need a 4/5 (!) majority to pass a Triviality, and you don't get as many points for it. But, because you cannot propose both a proposal to create a rule and to amend a rule on the same turn, and since you can submit up to 3 Trivialities per turn, Trivialities are often used as amendments. Some have complained about these "misused Trivialities", but the general reaction seems to be that they're OK.
Well, I just put up for RFC a *very* misused Triviality, 8 paragraphs long. I would have made it an amendment, but I want to be able to propose it next turn along with my "Amateur Comedians" rule.[3] We'll see what the reaction is.

[3]Though I suppose I'll make it an amendment if I decide not to propose that.
