So, I handed in my nervous system paper, found my Illuminati blanks, and did something else I can't remember right now.

I'm not taking Data Structures, but Tom is, and, as I may or may not have said (too lazy to check), Tom has moved to Glen Rock and is now on our bus.

It would probably help right about now for you to know who George is.

George is generally annoying, considers himself an expert in various things that he blatantly isn't (eg various computer-related things, cosmology/particle physics), and apparently doesn't give up a bad technique - or a bad anything - very easily. He's also on the Glen Rock bus.

I think I already told you the story about "Do you even know what a white hole *is*?!"

But that's not the point.

The point is that George is taking Data Structures, taught by Dr. Nevard. Now, he wouldn't be, except that they were 1 person short and it would have been canceled, and they went out looking for people to join, and he was the only one that was both willing and had the free mods.

And the point is that when the people were told to write a deque class, George did so by using an array, resizing the array - by creating a new one and copying the contents of the old one - each time a new item was added.

Needless to say this was horribly, well, horrible, and took (or at least in Tom's estimate would take) minutes to do what should have taken, well, I don't actually know how short, but short.

Now, it was supposed to be done using a doubly-linked list, but OK, so maybe George didn't know about linked lists. I know *I* didn't until Tom told me this story, but of course, I've never claimed to be a good programmer (only to be better than Toreun :) ). At any rate, it's a forgivable mistake.

But, as it turns out, linked lists are very useful for a *lot* of the various assignments that they're being given.

And George *keeps* trying to do it using arrays.

You'd think he'd get the idea by now.

According to Tom, Dr. Nevard pretty much wants to kill George, and has thought about putting up a big "NO ARRAYS" sign in the classroom.

At least George doesn't like V*s**l B*s*c (like Avi).

And so when, on the bus home one day, Tom overheard George (who was standing up) saying "I'm a good programmer", he got up and shouted, "George, you're not a good programmer! Sit down!"

And so that has become a general purpose phrase to be used against George, regardless of whether he's talking about programming (or whether he's standing). Although today he did complain that he was already sitting. (And he's complained at least once previously that he *is* a good programmer.)

Today was also the day we first heard the shouts of "George, you're not a good psychologist! Sit down!" and "George, you're not a good driver! Sit down!"

We'll see what develops by the end of the year.

The only reason I like VB is because I know how to make GUI's with it.
I admit it sucks and that C++ is great. I just don't know how to GUI in anything but VB. Once I learn, I'll almost surely abandon VB, and I plan to try to start learning more programming soon.

What's George's last name? (i.e. who is george....?)
BTW, I would have done the array thing the first time too.
But I agree he should get it if they tell him how to do it the right way. I too wonder what this quote'll develop into.
BTW2, I'm considering sitting in on DataStructures.... I'll have to ask Dr. Nevard's permission, though.
I wanna actually take it next year.

Dan Quayle seems to have a knack for scrooing up.
The Tony Blair quote is utter genius. Where the heck to you get these? They're brilliant....

The yeti returns next Thursday.

And again, as 4 VB, i haven't used it in a while, except when i'm writing minor apps just to do a particular problem because i just find i can write a simple prog (like less than 10 lines) a lot quicker in VB than in C++, and some of the things i do might be easier with actual GUI and non command prompt controls. I don't plan to stick to VB, though.

so, bye bye. And lucky you, harry. I really respect your utter knowledgefulness in math and proggery, and i look forward to the day when i can pirate the information inside your head.

Avi, could you please stop signing your name in the subject? Just do it in the message. That's not what the subject is for.

Avi: Stop worrying about GUIs! GUIs are not what is important! How can you even expect to write a graphical program if you can't even write a console program, anyway? If you won't learn a language unless you want to learn how to program graphically in it, you're not going to learn a lot of languages. Seriously...

And by George I mean George Hotz.
