Not, in fact, a legitimate strategy

OK, this is ridiculous. So I'm playing Kongai, I enter a ranked match, I'm given an opponent 10 ranks lower than me - 12 to my 22 - and he starts talking. "Hi", he says. "Allo", say I. And then he says, "My cat died today." I'm about to reply, "That's very sad, but why are you telling me this?", but before I can, he continues, "Can you plz forfeit for him?", and I just reply "Ahahaha". I mean I honestly thought it was kind of funny.
But then he just keeps begging me to forfeit. And when I finally explicitly tell him, no, I won't, he asks why. "Because I'm here to actually, y'know, play, not to distribute rank points to people?" And he just continues with his "but plz plz forfeit I just want the hard badge, you already have it". "Well you'll just have to earn it then, won't you?" "No."
Meanwhile he's playing like utter shit; he's using Yoshiro against my Marquis, and just using Rising Dragon all the time, so I just keep doing Life Drain and healing the damage. Finally he goes far, switches out, I intercept, he dies, Marquis is unhurt. And I'm about to tell him that while he's off to a (very) bad start, perhaps he can catch up if he spends more time thinking and less time talking, but before I can say that, he just up and quits.
He was at rank 12 and had a just barely negative win-loss record, 38-41, IIRC; I have to wonder how much of that is due to actually playing and how much is due to convincing people to forfeit/forfeiting himself when he can't.
I related this story to Wai Lee, here's what followed:
(11:01:49 PM) Tavgfrg: bizarre as hell
(12:03:42 AM) ramennoodle463: lol
(12:05:27 AM) Tavgfrg: I wonder whether he does that to everyone or just people ranked higher than him
(12:05:49 AM) ramennoodle463: yeah
(12:06:06 AM) ramennoodle463: well it would be a bizarre strategy
(12:06:55 AM) ramennoodle463: to like
(12:06:57 AM) ramennoodle463: wait till you level up
(12:07:06 AM) ramennoodle463: and hten start fighting people who are below you for this odd reason
(12:07:18 AM) ramennoodle463: ps FUCK ambrosia thorn
(12:09:08 AM) Tavgfrg: that's true, if you did this all the time, you wouldn't actually be able to beat people below you, but there's no way you'd be able to convince them to forfeit either
(12:09:15 AM) ramennoodle463: ha
(12:09:23 AM) ramennoodle463: haha
(12:09:26 AM) ramennoodle463: hmmmmmmmmmm
(12:09:32 AM) ramennoodle463: maybe his cat did die?
