Background
Sep. 17th, 2007 06:10 pmWhile to some extent this LJ functions as part of my external memory, obviously there are people actually reading it as well. Some apparently even think it's good. Really, its function, simply stated, is this is where I end up telling stories, spreading news... where I tell people the things I want to be told. Of course, this has often reduced how much I can tell them elsewhere, but oh well. Still, it's pretty clear that it's addressed to people who already know me and my context. Except in rare cases, where I thought some quick exposition/characterization was really necessary (like my Wai Lee vs. Shuo entry), I haven't bothered to give much of an idea of the characters people or the setting; if you don't already know, you really just have to put them together from the scattered pieces. (Incidentally, I used to have a story about Fergie that, whenever I was going to tell a story involving Fergie to people unfamiliar with him, I told it first for some quick characterization. Unfortunately I don't seem to have written it down, and I've since forgotten it.) Of course, there's a difference between important and noteworthy, and so if you do manage to piece a reality together it's likely to be a distorted one. I'm aware there are ways you can write to make these sorts of things accessible, but I don't want to take the trouble to do that, especially as I'm very bad at describing people and contexts. So I'm wondering if people would be interested in my writing a series of "background" entries, giving a whole background of me-in-relation-to. I would link to them from my profile so first-time readers would have somewhere to go. "Background: Harry and Smash" (you know I used to play Pikachu?), "Background: Harry and Nonsense Words" (I didn't always say "fnoo"), etc. Or just any stories I've mentioned but haven't told, and you want to hear. Whatever you guys want to see. So - would you be interested in that, and what would you want me to write? I'm not making any promises, of course. I could easily decide to just be lazy and not write it - in fact, I'd say this is the most probable case. Not to mention there's the problem of my spotty memory; there's a good chance that whatever you want me to recount will be something I've forgotten.
