Yay, I managed to get out Duel of Ages! Me and Dan (a first-year) as Team Black vs. Grant and Peter (a first-year) as Team White. Dan left midway, leaving me managing 6 characters, though that really wasn't so hard.

For Team Black, I had Marcus Aurus, the Genetic Superman; Pyraxian, the Crystal Being; and Boris Andronov, the Mercenary; and Dan had Damon Raven, the Techno-Punk; Milena Arrebato, the Freedom Fighter; and Ardin Glynn, the Weaponmaster. For Team White, Grant had Sterling Jack, the Con Man; Grok, the Brute; and Martians, the Little Green Men, while Peter had Geronimo, the War Chief; Annie Oakley, the Trick Shot; and Pvt. Sanchez, the Sniper.

We didn't set the time limit long enough, so, IMO, our characters were a bit underequipped - nearly all the melee was unarmed, though there was a good deal of shooting - but it was still really fun. We had to go into overtime, actually - at the end of the time limit, I was ahead in the Modern Labyrinth, but (at the last minute) Sterling Jack killed Boris Andronov, so we were tied. I eventually won when the Guardian of the Future Labyrinth challenged Pyraxian to land on some planet. Pyraxian amazed even the Guardian, and Team Black was judged the winner.

And somehow, Grok, stupid as he was, figured out the mystery of the ghost ship.

Yay. The first algebra pset was so easy that I did it immediately. Unfortunately, this presents me with what may be a greater challenge: Not losing it for an entire week.

Also, there was the problem: Given a group H where a²=e ∀a, with H finite and order not equal to 2, then the product of all elements of H is the identity. I wanted to just use linear algebra to classify all such groups and solve the problem all at once, but I figured that would be very much not allowed, so I did it by induction instead. :D

So! I return to LJ after being, well, not actually absent for very long at all. I will attempt to summarize what happened this first week. I will also completely abandon any hope of keeping this entry unified.

I was surprised to find that Summer was rooming with a first-year. I thought there were no second-years rooming with first-years? Turns out, Shuo's in China for the quarter. Meanwhile, Boz has indeed returned to Chicago, though she's not in Tufts or in Hitchcock, she's in Maclean.

Colleen also isn't here, but that's apparently because she's sick (?) and should get here tomorrow.

So, the new RHs, Bill and Dave...

...hm, let's skip over that for now.

House elections! Mark is our new President, Ginny VP. Tancer remains treasurer, I remain secretary. Actually, there were only three contested positions - VP (Ginny vs Chris), Assistant Social Chair (the RHs decided the Social Chair should have an assistant, who must be a first-year; more on that later), Aaron vs. Sara A - Sara A was not present to give a speech, but Aaron's speech said to vote for her, so you can guess who won - and Condom Tsar, Aaron vs. Ian vs. Sam vs. Jacob. Why is it that the worst people for Condom Tsar are always the people running for it? (Don't answer that.) Aaron wins by virtue of being the only actual good candidate (well, there was also Sam, but instead of giving a speech on why you should vote for him, he gave a speech on why you should check your email so you don't accidentally get nominated or even elected to positions you don't want).

As for other minor positions, Girl Alex is Social Chair and Condom Tsarina (it was decided that there should be one male, one female), Leslie (a first-year) is Kitchen Wench, whose job is now rather different, I'll get to that later, and we also now have an official Webmaster, namely Appie, whether she'll do anything, who knows. IHC rep is Colleen, who was uncontested despite not being here, while PTC reps are Wilson (first-year), Colin (first-year), and Laura (that friend that Marissa brought into the house).

OK, I do not want to turn this into another copy of the minutes, so enough of that.

Blake (the new RA) brought in a 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle. I'm not really sure what else to say about that, save that it was solved within a day, but I'm quite certain it's significant. (Also, it was missing a piece.)

Grant couldn't find his copy of F-Zero at the end of the year, so that's gone. We have picked up a copy of Mario Party (oh god, the controllers...) and Star Fox 64, though, and Aaron brings both a Gamecube and a PS2 with lots of games for the latter (though he's keeping both in his room for now).

I've decided to stick with CS 153 - yeah, it's boring, but there is some stuff we'll be doing later that I haven't seen before, so may as well. Despite Drama being moved from TTh to MW, my schedule remains sane.

So Lucas is still in math with me, Pavel is still in CS with me, but neither lives in Tufts anymore! So now I have no-one I can easily ask about these if I miss a class... :-/ OTOH, Sam, Mark, and Lulu are all in Soc with me. Speaking of Soc, it seems like it's going to be a lot better than Hum. The professor is Eric Oliver, who actually seems to know what he's doing, and the book we're reading right now is The Public and Its Problems, which is pretty good so far. Yay.

There is more to say - about the new RHs and about House Associates - but that will be saved for another time.

-Harry
