sniffnoy: (Golden Apple)
So today, as I put on a new pair of shorts, I felt a rather uncomfortable tag inside. I take them off, I look inside - on one side, the tag says "Remove before wearing or washing". The other side was blank. "Remove before wearing or washing." The tag apparently serves no purpose other than to get removed. That may just be the most pointless thing I've ever seen.

So the other day I was riding around on my bike and I came to the county park. So I went in, and I thought, "Hey! Why don't I go over that footbridge and see if I can find my way back home via the streets!" So I go over the bridge and I find myself on Corella Ct. Now, as you can see, it lies in this little area of Ridgewood bounded entirely by Grove St. I, of course, had no idea where I was. All I knew was that someone had told me at one point that Glen Rock actually corners on Paramus and that this bridge was actually at that corner, it took you directly into Paramus. I didn't actually know if this was true, and not really having a good idea of exactly where the town boundaries were or the streets in that area or really anything about where I was, I, well, didn't know where I was. Which was, after all, the idea.

Now, had I just turned left and gone straight, I would have come to Grove before long. Of course, I start out by turning right. There's an elementary school here. Does this help me identify where I am? No, I've never heard of this school before. Hm, that looks like a major road ahead! Now, of course, if I had any brains, I'd head *toward* the major road so I can tell where I am. Instead I turn left onto a little side street. Looking at the map, though, that actually wasn't a major road at all but in fact a dead end. I don't know what I was seeing. So now I'm on Houston Lane, then S Pleasant Ave. Now at this point you'd think I might recognize the name and realize, "Hey! This intersects Grove!" Nope. So I quickly turn right onto Dorchester, then right again onto Ellington. Not turning left onto Berkshire, I continue and begin to notice that the street isn't branching for a while... I ignore the turn onto Midwood, obviously turn left at Newcomb, which again, does not branch for a while... Midwood... didn't I see that name earlier? Let's not go that way, I don't want to go in circles. More non-branching... at this point the combined facts that I have no idea where I am, what direction I'm going in, and these streets are not branching very often, begin to scare me, and I figure I'll just ask someone for directions and get out of here. (Had I not done so, I almost certainly have turned right onto Berkshire, left onto Delaware, and then definitely decide I need to ask for directions upon re-encountering Dorchester and S Pleasant.) Instead I found someone who told me to just turn right and follow Berkshire to the end, so yay, I got out of there.
