Quiz Bowl from the other side (part 1)
May. 23rd, 2005 08:10 pm...oy.
So my room went rather well, even though I had to function both as reader and as recognizer - not a problem when you actually have buzzers, but seeing who slapped first is a bit hard when your eyes are on the paper. Amazingly, though, we only had to throw out one question.
(Actually, several others probably should have been thrown out, but the teams insisted on just going ahead anyway.)
There was also the problem of the lack of scoresheets, which thankfully turned out to be not much of a problem at all - though more on scoresheets later. There were the miscopied bonus packets, which had some of the answers cut off, and there was the bonus question, given the Star Wars character, in which episode did he first appear? Problem: One of the parts was "Darth Vader". Now, the original question wasn't too clear on whether the order should be considered 123456 or 456123 (keep in mind these are questions we wrote ourselves :P ), so while the intended answer is 3, 4 might also be acceptable, and plus there's the fact that as Darth Vader is the same person as Anakin, you could make a good case for 1. Yuch. So, new character. How about Princess Leia, I suggest, put under the name "Leia Organa"? No, apparently she appeared at the end of 3, points out Ben, who's seen it, so doesn't work. How about Wedge Antilles? He didn't appear in any of 1, 2, or 3, did he? No idea, say the others. Ben suggests Bail Organa, who (he says) only appears in Episode 3. We go with it. And, of course, the teams complain, because in fact he appeared briefly in 2, and some teams insist in 1. We should have just gone with Chewbacca. :P
Due to circumstances I would rather not explain, I accidentally led Brian Lee's team to think that the answer to a certain bonus was not in Belgium, when in fact it was Antwerp. Like I said, not explaining.
Now, the real problem: the scoresheets. Someone had the idea to use actual NAQT scoresheets, and nearly everyone had the idea to misuse them. I kept track of individual scores, but it seems that is out for the rest of the tournament, as most people didn't. Let's go through these scoresheets and see what we find...
Hm, this first one's mine. Although, I have a note to the side that I wrote when I got home and remembered I had forgotten to record Brian Lee's neg on "fullerenes". So my listed score is off by 5 points. Next one... also mine. Next one... no team numbers written down (nor is the moderator recorded)! Thankfully the schedule tells us who is on what team... next one is Mr. Sayres's, perfectly fine... then another one with no team numbers or moderator, then another one with no team numbers, then one lacking in information but still with team numbers and final scores, and then another one of Mr. Sayres's, and then... well, this is certainly unconventional, but it works... another one with no team numbers, and then... uh-oh. Big problem. No team numbers, no team names, no player names. Yikes. All I know is that one team beat another 110-10. Hm, wait, here's some initials, maybe I can use those...
Now for the bigger question: Why are there 12 scoresheets when there were only supposed to be 10 games played?!
*sigh*
UPDATE: OK, I'm ignoring the one with no names for now. As for the other 11, they record all 10 games played, one game just happened to be recorded twice. (?!) I'm guessing the no-names one is also redundant, but I have to actually figure out which game it was for...
Second update in a really quick row: OK, I found it. It's another double-recording by the same people. All the winners are now determined.
Oh one more thing: According to IMDB, which is hardly definitive but I'm just checking this quickly, Bail Organa was in Episode 2 but not in Episode 3, and Wedge Antilles was not in any of episodes 1 through 3.

Sixth character. Bail Organa was a very important character in Episode 3, the second-most important non-Force-sensitive character. (Padme, obviously, was more important.)
