You know what's really weird? Long hair. So Emily is sitting next to me in math class, and her head is on the table, and coming down off the side of it is *hair*. And I look at it, without looking at Emily. And I realize: hair, by itself, doesn't look like a person. Why does it have to be *her* hair? This hair is so far away from her head, she probably can't even feel it. I start flicking at it. She doesn't notice a thing.

That must be pretty weird, to have this entire *numb* part of your body like that.

Addendum: Actually, on second thought, I suppose it's really not much different from wearing a backpack. Only, a backpack transmits force a bit better, and it isn't actually a part of you...

LOL! you're entry is so for stoned people...

it's really not much different from wearing a backpack.

or other clothing in general, for that matter.
It's just that hair happens to be made by your skin.
Kinda like nails.
And eyebrows.

Having different lengths of hair does feel really different on your scalp though.

It's a bit heavier, especially after you bathe.

You mean if you're a guy who has long hair but usually has short hair? I was thinking more of girls who've had long hair their whole lives and then get it all cut off. You get used to the feeling of your hair being down versus in a ponytail, and the feeling of having to tuck your hair behind your ear, and you don't get any of that diversity if your hairs are just sticking straight out of your scalp and are only like 2 inches long.

Ah, I misread what you said.
I thought you said "Having different lengths of hair doesn't feel really different on your scalp though."

There are no sensory nerves in hair--if there were, it would hurt if you cut it. The pain you feel when it gets pulled comes from stress on the connections to your scalp. I've long wondered what it feels like to have long hair. I sometimes consider not getting a haircut, but I'm afraid it wouldn't grow in the right direction. Of course, AFAIK, the mechanism that makes the hair of men and women grow is essentially identical, and thus if it grows down on women it would probably grow down on me too. But then, my hair is pretty thick naturally, so I'm sure it would be really annoying to live with.

...wow. I can't believe I'm seriously thinking about this. :-P
