An invite is had!
Sep. 10th, 2004 09:31 pmOK, no more sending me gmail invites.
...OK, now that I've actually seen it, gmail seems really, really, unimpressive. It doesn't even use a monospaced font! What do I need 1 GB of server space for anyway when I have 11 GB remaining on my HD? It's not like I'm going to get an entire GB of mail inbetween two times I'm checking it. Stick to using my optonline.net address.

Date: 2004-09-18 04:16 pm (UTC)Sounds great to me. The question is: What feature does GMail have that makes it any better than Hotmail?
And-- the answer isn't space, because if you are using the service properly under the TOS and AUP (whichever exists), you aren't using it all, or probably anything over 50 megs, and that is stretching it. It is called "Marketing." When their servers start filling, and you have files being stored on your account-- you can bet it will be one of the first to go.

Date: 2004-09-18 08:24 pm (UTC)hotmail - 5 pieces of spam a day... gmail - zero
hotmail - giant animated gif ads.. gmail - text based helpful* ads
now the plugin thing... i still use hotmail, and i use a trillian plugin, but i only use it to see if i have any new mail. gmail auto refreshes and has the number of new mail right in the page title, so a tabbed firefox window thats always open anyway is all i need
download to POP3? that gets a careface
i think the main selling point besides space which i concede will shrink is that its cleaner and faster loading, and as a minimalist web designer i find those to be one of the most important attributes that any site should have. (and i like having an account without numbers in it :D)
* one time someone emailed me asking for home netowrking help, and i used the text ads to find deals on hardware and crap... hotmail on the other hand had a huge banner on some botox alternative.. `nuff said
