In not writing anything about the ending of PROMYS this year, I entirely neglected to mention who the JCs will (or might) be next year. These last few years have been strange ones for JCs, and that continues, but at least we have more now. Tim, of course, is staying as a JC; Andrew Ardito was offered the JCship, which is kind of surprising; but most surprising, Yoana, a first-year, was offered the JCship. (And all of them took it, IINM.) So, yay for having multiple JCs again, yay for having a female JC again, but there's definitely cause for wariness here. Only case I've heard of before of a second-year being a JC is Dustin (though Josh says there have been others), and Yoana's very good, but I don't think she's on a level with Dustin. Well, we'll see; it could well work. Of course, I won't be around to see.

The 2003 JCs were Etienne, Li-Mei, Dustin, and Fedor, correct? Li-Mei I know was a third-year, and Etienne I'm pretty sure was there in '02 as well as '01, but Fedor was almost surely not there in '02 after having been a first year in '01.

Those are definitely the right people, but are you sure about Fedor not being there in '02? I wouldn't know, of course, but they don't make people JCs unless they were there last year - after all, Glenn needs to go and offer them the JCship the year before. For instance, if we did that, Will would almost certainly have been made a JC in '08 - Erick was our only JC that year, so we sure could have used another, and Will could have done it, but he hadn't been there in '07 (he was there in '05 and '06). Maybe it was done differently back then? I don't think so... orr maybe Fedor was offered it after '01, but didn't return until '03? But that doesn't make sense - that would imply that not only would Fedor have been a first-year at the time, he also would have been, like, coming out of 10th grade, and it's hard to see how such a thing could even have been considered.

On the '08 JCs: there were a grand total of 8 returning students that year, and of them, 3 had graduated, and three were going into 11th grade , leaving me and Sara as the possibilities. I don't know about Sara and why she wasn't chosen, but there were also two first years that were asked and didn't come back. I think that it is not as exceptional (but still rare) that first-years get asked.

Yeah, I guess it's less rare than I thought; though them actually taking it seems more so. I guess Dustin is probably basically the only case where it happened and we weren't low on JCs. :P
