sudo echo "core.%e.%p" > /proc/sys/kernel/core_pattern
didn't work, but when I actually used su, it worked fine. Huh?

tee -a! tee without -a will clobber the file!
...of course, you're using > anyway, so presumably that's what you want. Heh. Freaked me out for a second there--I once was a little trigger-happy with the tee command, forgot the -a and accidentally overwrote my /etc/apt/sources.list file. :-P
