I did ultimately end up bringing my laptop, but it can't currently connect to the internet, for reasons I may get to.

I can't grade problem sets that haven't been turned in yet, so I may as well write this.

Unfortunately, I seem to have lost my big list of things to write about, so I'll just go with what I remember. It was probably far from complete anyway.

People: I haven't been here since 2005, so there is only one student I've seen before - Will Steadman, who was my roommate that year. Erick Knight is now a JC; anyone else I've seen before is now a counselor.

Erick Knight is in fact our only JC - apparently there was a dearth of returning students last year, and the other people who were going to be JCs didn't come back. He'll have to organize the talent show all by himself!

There actually seem to be several of us who were here in 2005, neither of the past 2 years, and are now back. In particular, also Rebecca and Fergie, IIRC. Other counselors who were here when I was are Djordjo, Lucas, Phil, Jason Bland, and Ila. ADan would have been a counselor but instead he went to Japan.

We actually have 20 counselors this year; apparently that's the most the program has ever had.

Li-Mei and Brandon are the head counselors. I have to say I didn't realize before now just how much more work head counselors had!

Only 2 BCA kids this year - Watson Ladd (who's a 3rd-year now) and one Kevin Koh.

The Ehrlich family continues to send its kids; we have 2nd-year Gabby Ehrlich. (Steve Ehrlich was a 1st-year with me, while apparently Josh Ehrlich was here sometime in the middle.) And we have one Ethan Cecchetti, who is in fact ODan's younger brother. And on the topic of family relations, one of our counselors is Evan Dummit, who is in fact the son of Dummit of Dummit & Foote. ("That's a good book. You should buy several copies of it.")

Josh is actually a counselor in the teachers' program (I'm waiting to hear the horror stories like from SESAME), but he's living with us even so.

Gaming: Quite a lot of it so far among the students. But it's early enough that it's possible for some of them to actually finish the problem sets. Naturally I ask sarcastically, "I take it you've all finished your problem sets?" but if they actually have (or claim to have), I'm not currently searching out more work to give them; I'll leave them to others.

I thought there would be no Illuminati - of course there hasn't been yet! - as I didn't bring it, Rebecca didn't bring it, and Josh didn't bring it... but turns out Will did. It seems Will and Gabby have each brought a bunch of games with them. So far the games I've seen that I haven't brought (other than ordinary card games) are Bang! and Zombie Fluxx. So, yay for lots of games, boo for lots of distracting the students right now...

(Also, I've managed to get a bunch of the counselors playing No Thanks! when we weren't doing anything the other day.)

2nd-year classes: We have Margy and Rosenberg, as usual, but instead of Rohrlich (who apparently taught another class on modular forms last year) or Ira Gessel, we have Robert Pollack teaching about representations of finite groups.

Internet: I couldn't make an account until today because it wouldn't recognize my lastname/ID pair. Fortunately now it did. However, in order to connect my own computer to the internet, I have to run BU's virus scan utility first. And my computer freezes when I attempt to do this. I'm afraid of continuing to try lest I damage my hard drive (I've had to do a hard shut down when this has happened). Unfortunately before leaving for PROMYS I only began backing up my hard drive, I didn't finish. I suppose I could try deleting the files it gets stuck on but somehow I don't think that would solve the problem. I have to say this destroys a lot of the reason I brought it - because the computer lab's only open till 11, and I like to check midnight updates. I guess it could still turn out to be useful, though.

Fergie: Fergie has had the idea of being a complete bad example for the students; fortunately I don't think he's going to follow through with this. He has a book with him called "750 Ways to Annoy People"; he says when he got it, he flipped through and found he had already done more than half. The other day at the barbecue he stuck a dime up his nose, and couldn't get it out for a while.

Housing: We're on the 9th, 10th, and 11th floors this year. The girls only have 1 floor. I'm on the 9th floor, but 2 of my students are on the 10th, on the opposite end of the hall; Li-Mei tried to place them in rooms that were apparently not available, so the university moved them. The university has made a number of rooms unavailable to us for reasons not apparent.

The research projects: They look pretty cool? Not much more to say right now.

Boston: So many Tufts people from the area, but apparently none of them will be here except Colin for a short time.

Miscellaneous: Here's something annoying. We're counselors, so no curfew for us, right? Well, there was on Friday... because we didn't have our badges yet, and the guards apparently would refuse to believe we were counselors without our badges. Even though nobody else was here yet.

Some people already suggested putting "potato potato" on the T-shirt.

This year in addition to the ordinary C tower lounges, we actually have the Melville lounge specially reserved for us.

More later when I remember it or find my sheet.

Wasn't Phil a first-year in 2005? Surely you know him (and have seen him already).

Also, the fact that there's a billion people from 2005 there makes me a little sad that I'm not there--someone should repeatedly remind me to visit.

Bah, just nuke the drive and install Linux. :-P

Of course, in that situation often the system will complain that it can't scan you for viruses and just lock you out...

They probably don't require that for Linux. The university apparently puts out its own distro that it advertises on posters all over the place...

Oh, yeah, but he's a counselor now. As are Djordjo and Jason Bland. I was considering counselors separately.

Buh? What distro is it?

Their own, as I said. It's called, unsurprisingly enough, "BU Linux".
