About the adapter-antenna thing, we actually used that exact mechanism my freshman year, since we were too lazy to get an actual antenna. Instead we'd just take the adapter cable and tape it up on the wall by the window; we had fun trying to figure out where to tape it to get the best signal. We also got a bunch of random channels; the shopping channel, 126 was actually our best reception, followed shortly by some Spanish network on channel 78. The real oddity came when we found out that the signal was actually coming from a different room, and so if you walked between the antenna and that room while the TV was on, the reception would fritz temporarily.
