EDIT: Expanded on the mumps story.

Have I ever told here Bill's story about his friend who got rubella? Bill had some friend who wasn't vaccinated against rubella as a child, and so when he went to South America, he had to get vaccinated. Only, he ended up getting rubella from the vaccine itself. After getting rather sick and looking up his symptoms, he calls up the hospital and says, "Hey, I think I have rubella." And the guy there just says, "No, you don't" and hangs up. (He did call back and actually got someone who listened to him, for the record.)

Well, just yesterday the news went out that somebody in Tufts House has the mumps - or rather, is displaying mumplike symptoms[0] and has been put in quarantine. Only, Bill and Dave apparently aren't allowed to tell us who. Immediately a list goes up on the lounge blackboard, "people who do not have the mumps". People start worrying about people they haven't seen that day. The suggestion goes out that maybe Grant, being a Christian Scientist, wasn't vaccinated and has the mumps. Of course, this is completely false as you have to be vaccinated to come here, and I'd seen him not a few hours earlier. The other big suggestion is that it's one of the soccer players - after all, nobody's noticed anyone missing, and nobody would notice one of them missing, so...

In is in fact Jan-Michael, the soccer player, though there was some confusion as to whether it was him or Joe. A woman from the SCC came down and told that it's very unlikely that he actually has mumps, but the rules demand they quarantine him. Ian wants to write him a card based on words rhyming with "mumps".

Meanwhile, I have been playing Excite Truck. A lot. Or, to be precise, on Sunday (or was it Monday?) night, I played Excite Truck for 7 hours straight. No lie. 7 straight hours, except for a 5 minute break to check something on the computer. I'm sure my mom will read this and leave some anonymous comment about how unhealthy this is. The result of this is that John (whose game and whose Wii it is, you will recall) has now also started playing it again to catch up with me in single-player. He's much better than me (particularly when it comes to air spins) but I play it more. :D

For that matter, you know you've been doing too much group theory when every time you see the number 6 you think "Z6 or S3". I was going to write this a while ago, although for now too much group theory has been basically replaced by too much Excite Truck.

Other thoughts: Also, I bought Munkres for topology and I noticed in its basic set theory section, it defines the codomain of a function as part of the function. I'm guessing maybe this is going to become more common as everything becomes more categorical?

[0]Yes, I could have just said "or rather, appears to have the mumps," but I wanted to use the word "mumplike".

Huh, I've always viewed the codomain as part of the function. It lets you know whether the function is surjective or not, and if it's continuous or not if you can't necessarily assume the standard topology for the range of the function.

*image, not range. I think.

They're the same thing.

It's an epic livejournal exchange in the lounge!

Actually, in some cases I have seen "range" refer to the codomain. Yeah, I don't know what they were thinking either. But just in case...
