I just learned from a discussion on Wikipedia that Jacobsthal multiplication was rediscovered in the 1980s by Conway. Possibly because they didn't have Wikipedia back then, he didn't know it was originally due to Jacobsthal. As far as I can tell, this rediscovery resulted in only two papers: One by Harry Gonshor, and one by John Hickman, both of which explored the arithmetic of this multiplication.
I think I'm going to go edit references to these into my own paper on the subject now. The history deserves to be connected up!
