Scatteredness
Mar. 21st, 2007 08:11 pmFacebook's "Wall" feature is kind of strange. Well, no - it's not inherently strange, what's strange is the way it's used. Well, what's strange is that if someone writes something on your wall, the customary thing - rather than doing the obvious thing of responding on your own wall, to keep continuity - is to respond on the other person's wall. I suspect that the original reason for this was that you were only notified by email when your own wall was written on; there was (and still is) no way to watch a person's wall other than to manually check it. Now I for a while resisted this, but once Facebook implemented its "wall-to-wall" feature, I gave in, as they seemed to be officially supporting that. Still, had they added a way to watch another person's wall in the first place, this probably could have been averted. Anyway...
The point is, it's strange, in that trying to read a wall straight through, there's no continuity. And so if you just read from bottom to top as if there is, you get some funny results.
E.g., my wall, right now.
Girl Alex asks:
"wait...is your sister coming to visit?"
Anna responds:
"Yes! I will be! I'm going to be at the ACS meeting March 25th-28th. Will you be in Chicago? I don't really know my schedule yet, but I will let you know once I do... "
Anna is my sister?! I was unaware of this...
Not quite as good,
Kate Harney asks:
"do you ever get that feeling like you just really don't want to shower?"
Sydney responds:
"brilliant!!"
...I have nothing to say about that one.
