sniffnoy: (Chu-Chu Zig)
...wait, strongholds are only 2 mustering points? Why did I think they were worth 3? Well, that changes things...

So this weekend Nick's friend Peaches was here. I have to say, from what little I'd heard, I'd imagined him to be considerably... bigger? Is that the word I'm looking for? Not literally physically bigger, but just generally the sort of person you can't fail to notice. Hm.

The two of them showed up at my house on Monday night; we played a game of T&E and a game of Keythedral. Peaches had gotten very little sleep last night and was pretty much falling asleep throughout all of Keythedral; several times we asked him if he really wanted to continue playing, but he insisted. And, in fact, he still managed to beat Nick. (I actually managed to win at Keythedral, while Nick once again dominated at T&E.)

The next day Nick's copy of AGoT arrived and of course he immediately wanted to play it. (He and Peaches had also gone to Barnes and Noble to get copies of the book.) Nick ended up as Stark, Peaches was Lannister, and I was Baratheon. Thankfully, this time Nick explained the rules so I didn't wear my voice out again (though I have to say I did keep on butting in), and also corrected that little issue of just how much strongholds are worth.

Despite having only 3 players, this game actually had considerably more diplomacy (i.e. any at all) than any I'd played before it. Nick immediately started expanding southward, Peaches immediately started expanding northward (as well as slightly southward to take Highgarden), but left his position really open to the east (though it would take me a while to actually go in there and take it). I meanwhile basically just took the various cities/strongholds around me, excepting the Reach, as I didn't know that I could defend that against Peaches. By turn 2 I had taken King's Landing. Nick and Peaches soon get into a standoff between Riverrun and Seagard; I pledge my support to Peaches's side. I also attack Nick's ships and take the Narrow Sea, driving him back into the Shivering Sea. Mustering is drawn the next turn, I try to put some ships back in Shipbreaker Bay and Blackwater Bay (I had moved them both into the Narrow Sea in the attack), but Nick points out that little rule about not being able to build ships where you don't already have any... curses. On turn 3, Peaches decides to attack on a different front and brings his troops up to Flint's Finger via the Sunset Sea; Nick moves to defend. About turn 4, I bring a ship back into Shipbreaker Bay.

Turn 5. You'd think someone other than me would have been counting cities/strongholds - Nick and Peaches both had 4, while I had 6. Remember, 3 player game, so you need 8 to win. Basically, I won this because I somehow managed to convince Peaches I wasn't a threat. Nick said afterward he realized I was a threat, but he apparently didn't think to point this out to Peaches so they might do something about it; instead the two of us continued to gang up on Nick - but only one can win...

I once again tell Peaches I'll support his defense against Nick. In fact, I just defend instead, wary of the possibility that Peaches might turn around and attack *me* at Harrenhal. It's not very likely, but I need it, after all, if I'm going to win this turn. Peaches moves his ship from the Sunset Sea into the Bay of Ice, stranding his guys at Flint's Finger but preparing to take Winterfell itself, which Nick has left unmanned! Of course, he never gets the chance as I, with my ships regained, take both the Eyrie and White Harbor, which Nick has left also unmanned. Nobody can do a thing about it; I win, after only 5 turns, and having fought only 1 battle. :D The, uh, stag's cunning? Hm.

Also, the wildling threat meter got all the way up to 8; there were no wildling attacks. Though the shortness of the game might also have to do with that...

Peaches takes one of Nick's "You Suck" cards and gave it to me; Nick complains that they're not his to hand out, though he doesn't take it away[0]. I mention that I'm surprised nobody got any during the game; Nick immediately retroactively gives one to Peaches for not doing anything about my expansion. (Of course, Nick probably should have pointed out to him that he should have done something, but...)

...yeah, I have no proper ending for this entry. Long live King Stannis!

(Also, a random thing that's been bugging me about Cave Story: Why isn't anything ever said about Misery's father? Yes, I know, the story is stupid and doesn't really make sense, but still, it's just such an obvious oversight...)

[0]As I've probably mentioned, stuff tends to accumulate in my pockets. So for much of last year, at Chicago, I was actually carrying around in my pocket a "You Suck" card that Nick had given me some time ago. As Nick didn't take this new card back, I decided to keep it, just so I would have one again. What happened to the one in my pocket? I gave it to Alex, not to tell her she sucks (only Nick is allowed to do that, after all), but because she thought it was such a cool idea that she wanted to keep it. And, I figured, I'm sure I'll easily get more...
