Harry vs half the world
Apr. 22nd, 2006 12:19 amSo it happened that we were in the study lounge and were saying something about the last name Green - I believe it had to do with Michael Green[0], Shuo was there - I think she was retelling, well, OK, I'll start a substory.
So Alex is involved with the Piercescav organizational stuff. And she was saying about how as a fundraiser, they were going to do a speed dating thing. And Alex says, "I think Michael Green is going to do it." And Shuo's eyes go wide and she goes "Really?!" like she's actually anticipating this now, she's going to sign up, and of course Alex says, "No, not really." - and, well, you had to see it, I suppose, but simply put, Shuo was really disappointed. She does what she always does in such situations, which I honestly don't know how to describe, so I think I'll return to the main story now. Wow, I told that awfully. Regardless.
And I just sort of randomly say, "I know someone whose last name is Green" - thinking here of Josh Green, though of course Green is actually a very common last name - and Grant says, "Harry's last name is actually green." And I get an idea. I say I'll be right back. I go downstairs to the chalkboard in the lounge. There's colored chalk but no green - there's yellow, that might work, but no. I see there's a lot of people in Michael Toney's room. I ask if any of them have a green marker or pencil or anything, but they don't. I go back to the study lounge, figuring I won't waste any more time on it. There I find on the board "ALTMAN" written in big outlines, and Grant telling me, "See! Your last name *is* green!" It took me a moment to realize that since the chalkboard was green, the interiors of the letters were green. So I say, "That was exactly what I was thinking-" and am interrupted by Shuo and and whoever else was there (Summer? Alex? Nadja?) bursting out laughing. Apparently they have some sort of running joke about me and Grant being the same person? (Grant also appeared to know about this.) However, I manage to prove that we are not, in fact, the same person by pointing out that I didn't think of using the inherent greenness of the chalkboard, and that I had gone to look for green chalk or pencil.
Regardless, "ALTMAN" is now on big letters on the chalkboard.
Some time later, either Grant or Lucas adds a big "vs." below it, and below that, "Ctrl Woman". It took me a moment to get it as the "Alt" pun actually hasn't been used in a while. I add beneath "ALTMAN", "(with his sidekick, Meta Boy!)". And that stands there for some time.
Eventually, Lucas, wanting to do some math in the lower left hand corner, erases "Ctrl". The board now reads, "Altman vs. Woman". Oh boy. Later, Alex, deciding to make things a bit less abstract (?), changes "Woman" to "Women". Someone else changes it back to "Woman". Eventually Lucas adds back in the "Ctrl", which is how it stands currently, so I'm no longer fighting half the world. Except that somewhere along the way, my sidekick disappeared. I wasn't really paying much attention to that.

[0]Michael Green is a philosophy professor here. Shuo is taking his ethics class, I think. I think Alex is too.
