One year when he introduced the p-adic absolute value and a student asked just what it measured, Mr. Sally responded, "The p-adic absolute value measures a rational number's p-ness."
(Try saying that aloud if you don't get it.)
I'm certain there was something else I meant to write, but it escapes me right now.
