ADan: One time, my friend and I had a contest to see who could slam his head into a fencepost harder.

Today's lecture did not have the crowd of orange (that being this year's color), as the T-shirts were not given out till after lecture, rather than yesterday. (Glenn, of course, was wearing the T-shirt during lecture even so.) Still, the orange crowd was there for, well, everything else today, including Dustin's lecture immediately following Number Theory on the meaning of the shirt. It's an alternate proof of QR, which is essentially based on a less complete version of Gauss's Lemma and some properties of Chebyshev polynomials.

Today's lecture *did* have Lorelei doing her slave time (claimed by Sara and Seohyung (apparently that's how it's really supposed to be spelled)). She couldn't speak, and she had to do an interpretive dance to the lecture. Really she ended up just miming whatever Glenn was saying, if she could. Then, at the end, she had to arm wrestle Glenn. From what I could tell, they didn't actually bother really doing so, they just started and then stopped after a few seconds, but whatever.

As for the shirt, it is much better than last year's (which isn't hard, of course. :P ) As "2005", when written all blockily, is reflection-symmetric about the line between the two zeroes, that's what they did. They wrote everything in this blocky font and had all the text just fill out the "20", with the "05" being the entire thing reflected, as in the text was actually printed backwards. Yay.

I got a quote on the T-shirt! "They're topologically equivalent, but they don't taste the same!" Also Eric the Red did - "You backstabbing fronstabber!" - unless it was "You frontstabbing backstabber!" - I can't remember which - after complaining that he never got one in all his three years as a student. (He was on the T-shirt committee, so he made sure he did.) A lot of Rohrlich quotes, and Bernie actually got 4 ("HOW DO UNICORNS HAVE ANY BEARING ON THIS!" was him.) They did not put ∞-boy's name as Nick "Infinity-boy" Slowey, they just wrote "Nick Slowey", but they made sure to put Rohrlich's "exuberance of infinity" quote right before his name. :D Meagan got a quote, consisting of just a few blank spaces. I don't believe I've mentioned Meagan on here before, and with good reason. She's a counselor, and for all of PROMYS, she has been heard to speak only a few times, generally short sentences. Most have not heard her speak at all, except for when she introduced herself at the beginning of the year. So, yeah. More on the T-shirt later, when I'm not wearing it and can actually see it.

Oh, yesterday! The final! I took the short final. I got a 40 on it, which I think was a low score, considering I mostly (only?) just got easy questions. Actually, I missed some easy questions through sheer obliviousness - I can't say what they were, of course, but let me just say that I failed to realize that if you have two primes, each greater than 2, then their sum is even. Yay.

Oh, JCs! The JCs for next year are Chris, Seohyung and Caroline (yes, even though Caroline will be a junior).

OK, that's all for now.

Actually, no, it isn't. Some things omitted...

Firstly, Glenn's quote on the front of the shirt, a very good one this year: "If all your conjectures are true, you're probably not being bold enough."

Secondly, remaining lab presentations! First, four-numbers game, which was good, except that they kind of failed to mention a very important step in one of their important proofs - one that itself required proof, at that. Then, the second tropical algebraic geometry group, consisting of the JCs, which would have been good except that Lucas's and Tom's parts - the important parts, really - were both rushed because Fergie, who went first, went slowly and didn't bother to look at the clock at all. Finally was this year's hyperbolic triangles group - doing something totally different, of course - which was good, except that I kind of stopped bothering to follow it about halfway through. Yeah, not really much to say about that.
