sniffnoy: (Chu-Chu Zig)
So yesterday was animation night. There was actually a new one this year, which hadn't been played in any previous year - "The Bear and the Fly". It was supposed to go from 20:00 to midnight, but when midnight came around there were still 3 more they wanted to show - namely, The Sneetches, The Mathematical Peep Show, which is another new one, and, of course, Bambi meets Godzilla, however unplayable it may have become. They were going to just continue anyway, but apparently ITRP had reserved the cinema room from midnight on, and

So sometime during animation night the reports started coming in that Fairfield Tower had been closed off. It had been flooded. Everyone's immediate thought was, of course, oh fuck, the sprinkler system's gone off, which would mean everything at floor level, and quite possibly higher, would be thoroughly soaked, including any, say, paper, books, computers, or other electronics one might be storing at the level.

Thankfully, that turned out not to be the case - all that had happened was that some ass from one of the summer programs departing that day had gone up to the 18th floor and turned on all the showers. The water had seeped down through the floor to the 17th and 16th floors, but went no further. (Nobody lives above the 13th floor in Fairfield.) However, it had made it to the front staircase, and from there progressed all the way down to the 4th floor. The stairway doors are designed to prevent any water from getting into the hallways in such a case, but the stairs themselves we were not allowed to use, neither were we allowed to use the elevators, which who-knows-what might have happened to. So we were allowed back into Fairfield, but we had to use the rear stairway, which normally is locked at the 4th floor; it leads into the Melville Lounge, which is currently undergoing construction. So yay, we got to legitimately go into the construction zones. :D

Of course, that wasn't all there was to it. Towards the end of animation night, we were interrupted by an ORL official telling us we had to send all the females back up to Marshall Tower so they could perform a male headcount. This got many cries of "What the hell?" in response, and, just a short while afterward, they decided to cancel this, but it caused much confusion in the meantime.

So it's after animation night and a bunch of us have gathered in the Marshall Tower lounge to watch History of the World Part I - we haven't started yet - and some guy comes and tells us that we all have to go back upstairs. Josh and Rebecca decide to handle this one, asking him what authority he has to say that. He says he's from another summer program, and he told all his kids to go upstairs. Well, we're counselors, they say, and if you're just from another summer program you don't have the authority to tell us to do that, and we will keep our kids here, that's not against any rule. He says he doesn't think it's very fair that his kids have to go upstairs and PROMYS doesn't. They point out that he's the one that sent them upstairs. I think he had one other nonsensical point as well. Naturally enough he wouldn't listen to Josh and Rebecca and all, but finally they managed to get rid of him, I forget how, after which Josh turned to us and said, "OK, did anyone else understand what that guy was talking about?" What's even weirder, though, is that that guy was apparently also an ORL official, but at no point did he simply use his authority as an ORL official to send us upstairs - the counselors wouldn't have been much able to object had he done that.
