A good day
Apr. 8th, 2005 05:41 pmChris didn't like the English letters idea, so I didn't do it.
Today was largely a nothing day. You know, it's really strange, somehow I hadn't been to the library in months, and a nothing day would have been a bad thing. But now I had a book, so that was good.
Dr. Galitskiy was absent. I read through all of Senior Seminar (except when I was bothering to look like I was paying attention). There were 3 people in CS, not many more in math.
Today also I learned that the Bussard ramjet was actually thought up by William Bussard. I'd only seen it in Niven's stuff, so I always assumed that Niven had thought it up and it was named for a fictional Dr. Bussard, who invented it.
It came up when I was telling Dr. Nevard about this - I'm reading Footfall, by Niven and Pournelle, which takes place in the present, and aliens are coming to earth, and a bunch of sci-fi writers are looking at tracking data of the alien ship, and one of them notices that the ship dropped something, and one of them suggested that maybe it dropped a Bussard ramjet. Which is still pretty funny, but to me it was even more so because I thought Niven had come up with the Bussard ramjet.
Also today found Ryan and Zach slapfighting, but this time with an interesting condition: Your front foot had to be kept against the other guy's, and couldn't move; your back foot could only move along the line and pivot slightly. Otherwise, it was a point for the other guy. Falling over also counts as a point against you. They played to 10. Zach won, 12-10 (it was win by 2) and he played Andrei, and beat him 10-0, while I played Ryan and lost 10-7, pretty good for my first time, I suppose. Then I played Andrei, and beat him 10-7. Then Ryan and Zach went back to it and I stopped keeping track.
