Return of Arithmetree!
Mar. 22nd, 2005 04:14 pmI made 50¢ today betting on Smash Brothers. They were holding all-computer matches - random characters, random location - with everyone on level 1. So you'd get all 4 fighters standing right next to each other, and they'd all just stand there, and then one of them would punch. It was ridiculous. The first one (well, not the first one actually, but the first one I was there for the start of, and thus the first one I bet on) was Samus, Yoshi, Pichu and Roy, at Fourside; I correctly bet on Samus, paying my $1 and splitting the $5 put in with Johnny, who also bet on Samus. The second one was Mewtwo, Dr. Mario, Falco, and Ness, at Kongo Jungle (the raft one, not the Past Stages one); I bet on Ness. I forget whether Dr. Mario or Falco won. The third was Bowser, Donkey Kong, Fox, and Peach at Corneria; I bet on Fox. Bowser won, but nobody had bet on him, so we all got our money back. After that, they went back to actually playing. So I came out 50¢ ahead.
I also came across Mr. Sayres and Dr. Ostfeld looking at The Book of Bunny Suicides and Return of Bunny Suicides - all these cartoons of bunnies killing themselves in ridiculous ways. Really great.
Total dumbass moment today: I accidentally left my backpack - yes, my *backpack* - on the bus home. Meanwhile, George continues to insist that 1=0. ("Multiplying through by 100, 100=0 - so I actually got a 100 on my Lit paper!"[0]).
I ended up giving Mickey's Rio Fuse to Yuriy. Well, actually, he bought it from me for $10.
Dr. Mayers actually gave us back our Books of Summer, though with neither comments nor grades.
Yuriy, if ye be wantin' t'join the crew of the Salmon, IM me. Ye have way too many AIM names for me t'be keepin' track of.
Anyone else wanting to join would be good too...
No, I'm not going to give a full explanation of Ryan's continued pirate attacks on my ship here. Maybe some other time.
Hah, a few days ago Ben and Ryan were what they called "slapfighting" - I like the description given by - who was it? - better: "arm fencing" (each had one arm behind his back, and was trying to slap the other person with his free arm) - in the breezeway, and I happened to mention that Ben was Master-at-arms on the Salmon. "Ah, so now it's a political battle," said Vlad. "Political?!" I replied. "His side's just pirates!" "Yeah, but it has extra significance."
(Quotes from Vlad very approximate.)
Now, as for Arithmetree. We have to write this "research" paper for Senior Seminar. Hm. What math "research" could I possibly write about that's related to this class? Well, does it really matter if it's related? Mrs. Picinich won't be able to tell the difference anyway! So how about Arithmetree? I did *actual* research on that, if not very much! So I wrote it on that, specifically, on the cardinality-of-sum formula that we found.
Also, doing a search on arXiv for "arithmetree" (with no author) actually turned up 2 papers - Loday's original, and another one, in which the author, SFAICT, finds the partial order on general trees that we were looking for. It looks really complicated.
...yeah, that's it.

[0]I don't think I ever talked about this here; look for it in a future entry.
