Coincidences
Jan. 18th, 2005 06:16 pmYuriy, to Max Murphy: "Your people eat rocks for dinner. And limestone for breakfast. And rock salt for lunch. And, like, oregano." (I may have that slightly wrong.)
We did Gauss's Law in physics today, and Gauss's theorem in math. Soon we get to do complex analysis, which hopefully will be less ichy.
I actually looked up Maxwell's equations the other day, and was greatly confused to see that they were actually different in mks units and in cgs units. Today, I finally manged to figure out how this is - it's partly because in cgs, charge can be expressed in terms of the other units, with k=1/4πε0=1, and partly because when people talk about B in mks, and when they talk about B in cgs, they're not talking about the same B. The cgs B is c times the mks B.
Gah! Remember Nomicron's "Disenfranchisement" rule? If, on a turn, you vote against every proposal that passes, and for every proposal that fails, you can complain to the public forum that you've been disenfranchised, and thereby gain 15 points (well, pears). Anyway, we didn't start out Round 5 with that rule, so, when, for only the second time in the history of Nomicron, that actually happens - with both pitboss and me disenfranchised - the rule didn't exist! Naturally I've reproposed it now. (The first time happened with pitboss, in Round 3; however, he forgot to claim his points.)
