Stop piled shorn!
Aug. 14th, 2003 08:03 pmIt's been a few days since my last entry, so don't expect me to get in everything I would have said had I posted it all at the time. As a result this entry will also be quite rambling.
So [censored] and [censored] filled Bob's shoes with shaving cream, and also sprayed it on his clothes. Unfortunately, Bob's shoes have inserts, and they sprayed it on his *dirty* clothes. So much for that.
OK, it's no secret, one of the two "[censored]"s is Charlie (unsurprisingly). You can kind of tell from the way he's been chasing people around with shaving cream the past few days.
Naturally enough, now that we've proven *quadratic* reciprocity, some people were wondering about *cubic* reciprocity. Considering I started writing that sentence yesterday, I can't remember the rest of this paragraph. Oh well.
Charlie also wrote a sign to be hung on Bob's door; I won't repeat it here. (Since I don't remember it.)
Many of the nametags have been ripped off people's doors and hung in bizarre locations, such as on stalls in the bathrooms or on elevators. The word "events" on the events board has been changed to read "Glenn"; I'm sure you can guess what happened to Steven's nametag. (This is above a giant picture of Glenn, specifically the one the Dragon Curve group put on the board. And yes, "I like dragons" is written next to it. If you're not from PROMYS, don't ask. I would have explained, but like I said, this is all very compressed.)
Today (ie Thursday) was the final; I mostly just did numericals. P8 was Gauss's Lemma, P9 was Modified Gauss's Lemma, and P10 was the Pretty Picture Lemma. P11 was QR. So I proved P11 by assuming P9 and P10. :)
Scaring Chris with basic facts from lambda calculus is fun. *g*
Today was also the day they gave out the T-shirt. The year on the back, however, is 1984, with a subscripted "101". See if you can figure out how that's 2003.
Quotes have been censored. Very definitely. Although some are definitely funnier that way.
"You guys, let's just talk about sex again." -> "You guys, let's just talk about sets again."
"It's funny because it's child porn." -> "It's funny because it's piled shorn."
Every instance of "damn" -> "dang diddly-darn"
And, of course,
"Radioactive genitalia" -> "Radioactive? Genya'll tell ya!"
I don't have the shirt with me right now; it is somewhere on the 5th floor. I think. I need to find Cameron and ask him which size shirt I got; I thought it was a small, but checking the shirts scattered over the fifth floor lounge, I found no smalls.
I also bought the Fermat's Last Theorem shirt.
Illuminati game today. And in fact there's going to be *another* today. (Today was the final, so we don't have any problem sets.) It'll (They'll) be in the usual location, as illutree6.txt (and illutree7.txt). I can certainly say the first one had some really great power structures. Mung won quite unexpectedly as the UFOs imitating SubGenius. And we really should have seen it coming when he made that final privileged attack. I guess we all just assumed it was Mung being stupid as usual. :P
You know, it occurs to me that Mathworld is really quite far from comprehensive. Some things it just leaves out for no good reason. It has an entry on cubic reciprocity but it leaves out the actual statement of it. It has an entry on lambda calculus but it doesn't really say anything about it.
