Yay, Friday!
Jul. 18th, 2003 06:56 pmAnother Friday, another utter failure to get a problem set significantly longer than usual, and another Mandatory Fun, which isn't for another hour or so. Surprisingly, I actually did some of the problems, although of course we started off the day (after Number Theory, obviously) with a game of Settlers, which Daniel won, as always, despite repeatedly insisting that he was totally screwed.
On the way to dinner, Fan (Yang) asked Josh to pick an integer from 1 to 100, and then asked him for the remainders mod 3, 5, and 7. Since 3*5*7=105, he could determine it from this. So, the second time around, Josh picked the remainders 0,2,4, which corresponds to 102 mod 105. Fan said Josh picked 102, but Josh pointed out that he was supposed to pick a number from 1 to 100; obviously he didn't pick 102. Fan pointed out that this was impossible, and Josh asked him to prove it. Had he *tried* all the integers from 1 to 100? Well, Fan didn't know how to prove it, so he just repeatedly insisted at intervals that Josh had picked 102. At one point Jon Pinyan told Fan that the number Josh has picked was 49+1/2, which Fan then repeated, for whatever reason. Not only is it not an integer, but it most definitely is not congruent to 0,2,4 mod 3,5,7. *shrugs*
I'm vaguely wondering about the email accounts we automatically get for being here at BU; specifically, when are they going to be deleted? Not that I use it for anything, but still...
Oh, and I actually *did* have more to say yesterday, but I haven't the slightest clue as to what it was.
