When people learn primarily on a pad at first, that's usually the first thing they get over, provided they have a good sense of the beat already. In your case, however, you had already become quite proficient at reading before you tried to play on a pad, so you got screwed over by the lack of foot technique. Just borrow a pad or something and learn to play for real. After all, there's only so much Stepmania can teach you beyond reading. :-P
